Sabathia in the near future, but now his return to the team is in question after he recently woke up with inflammation in his right knee.

Sabathia struggled Wednesday night in his outting for Double-A Trenton. An MRI the next day revelaed the inflammation, and the team has decided to shut him down.

“We’re waiting to see what the next step is,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Can’t tell you how long he’s going to be shut down. He said nothing during the game about it, he woke up today, and that’s the report I got. Today it was swollen, similar to what he’s experienced before.”

Aside from rookie starter Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees starting pitcher has been a major issue all season. Not counting Tanaka, the Yankees’ starters have a 4.62 ERA on the season.

Even when he was on the mound earlier this season, Sabathia has struggled to resemble the All-Star pitcher fans have been used to seeing. In eight starts this season, Sabathia is 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA.

The Yankees are 23-26 since Sabathia’s last start
