(ASHTON, ID) – After years of battling potentially dangerous chemicals, the city of Ashton has finally cleaned up its drinking water.

KIDK reports that the town built a $3.1 million water treatment facility in 2012 to filter out problematic nitrates. Officials with the Natural Resources Conservation Service are also helping Ashton’s area farmers correct the pH problems in their soil.

The city had previously had problems with fertilizers seeping into groundwater. Ashton residents will pay off the loan for the water treatment center with a base monthly water rate of $32.
