Lawrie has been out of action since June 22 when he suffered a broken right index finger when he was hit by a pitch. He began his rehab assignment on Friday and went 4-for-10 for High-A Dunedin.

Before getting hurt, Lawrie was on pace for a career season. In 69 games, Lawrie already has a career-high 12 home runs to go along with 38 RBIs and a .244 batting average.

The Blue Jays plan on alternating Lawrie, 24, at third base and second base as he returns to the field against first-place Baltimore Orioles.

Still a young player, the Blue Jays see Lawrie as one of the faces of the franchise going forward, so how he performs the rest of the season will go a long way. It will also help the Blue Jays reach the postseason for the first time since 1994.

Entering Tuesday, the Blue Jays are four games behind the Baltimore Orioles for first place in the AL East.
