Blue Jays Win MLB’s Second-Straight 19-Inning Game

Robert Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(TORONTO) — One day after the Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox in 19 innings, the Toronto Blue Jays got a walk-off single from Jose Bautista in the bottom of the 19th to down Detroit, 6-5 on Sunday. It is the first time in MLB history that two 19 inning games have been played on consecutive days.
The 6-hour, 37-minute marathon saw the Blue Jays (63-56) comeback from an early 5-0 deficit to earn a series win over the Tigers (63-52). Detroit jumped on starting pitcher Mark Buerhle, knocking him out of the game in the fourth after Ian Kinsler’s ground rule double drove in Austin Romine for the fifth run of the day.
Toronto’s bullpen then took over and held off the Tigers long enough for the comeback. Dioner Navarro opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth before Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera hit consecutive singles in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4.
Reyes added another RBI in the ninth, scoring Anthony Gose to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Both teams’ bullpens were able to work in and out of trouble in the 12 extra frames before Munenori Kawasaki started the 19th with a single.
Reyes then reached after Ian Kinsler couldn’t handle a throw from pitcher Rick Porcello on a bunt attempt. Cabrera was then intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out, setting up Bautista’s heroics. It is only the second walk-off hit of Bautista’s career.
