(JACKSON, WY) – A Minnesota man was seriously hurt while climbing the Grand Teton solo on Friday morning.

Investigators say Steve Markusen of Minneapolis, fell about 100 feet down near the Friction Pitch at about 13,300 feet. Markusen was rescued by several other climbers, which included four Boston firefighters who rendered First Aid.

Park officials discourage solo climbing because of higher risks of fatal injuries. After his fall, it took crews nearly five hours to get Markusen to the hospital in Jackson.
