Harry Belafonte, Maureen O’Hara Among Honorees for Academy’s Governors Awards

getty 082914 harrybelefonte?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1409313565040Jemal Countess/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Harry Belafonte will be honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at its annual Governors Awards in November.

The 87-year-old actor/activist has been named the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which is given “to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”

The “Banana Boat Song” performer has taken up causes such as education, famine relief, AIDS awareness and civil rights.

The Academy also announced three people who will receive honorary Oscars, including Maureen O’Hara. The 94-year-old O’Hara appeared in such films as Miracle on 34th Street, The Quiet Man and The Parent Trap.

Screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, a four-time Oscar nominee, and filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, a three-time nominee, will also receive honorary statuettes. Both have won one Academy Award.

The 6th Annual Governors Awards will be held Nov. 8 in Hollywood.
