Helicopter Carrying Aid to Iraqis Crashes, Killing One

GETTY 81214 Chopper?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1407872001865iStock/Thinkstock(BAGHDAD) — A helicopter carrying aid to stranded refugees went down in northern Iraq Tuesday, killing one on board.

The chopper was delivering food and supplies to members of Iraq’s Yazidi community, when on the return flight, it crashed, killing the pilot.

Two western journalists — Alyssa Rubin and Adam Ferguson, both on assignment for the New York Times — were among those on board. A statement from the newspaper says Rubin suffered broken wrists and a concussion while Ferguson wasn’t hurt.

Kurdish officials aren’t saying what caused the crash, but the speculation is that it was overloaded with refugees who were stranded on the mountain top and desperate to escape.
