In conducting its 2014 Pet-Friendly Renting Trends Survey of 3,000 people, Apartments.com learned that 72 percent of respondents owned an animal, and of that group, 88 percent said that the pet policy of their building played a major role in their decision to ultimately live there.

According to the survey, 64 percent of pet owners admitted having a difficult time finding an apartment that allowed pets, especially those that allowed large dogs.

Overall, cats and small dogs are the most popular apartment pets, at 41 percent and 39 percent, respectively.

Of the people who moved in with pets, 80 percent said they had to pay the landlord a pet deposit averaging $200 annually. Last year, only 60 percent were told to make a similar deposit.
