(LOS ANGELES) — Actor Jon Voight penned an open letter criticizing, among others, fellow Oscar winners Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, who signed a letter criticizing Israel for its military action in Gaza.
Bardem, Cruz and a number of Spanish actors, directors, musicians and writers signed an open letter published this past week denouncing Israel’s military action in Gaza. Voight responded in kind. His letter was published on the websites for Hollywood trade publications including The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
Voight said he was “heartsick that people like Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem could incite anti-Semitism all over the world and are oblivious to the damage they have caused.”
Cruz and Bardem both later issued clarifications, noting their hope for peaceful resolution.
Voight, in his letter, asked those “who signed that poison letter against Israel to examine their motives.” He later added that Israel’s critics should “hang your heads in shame. You should all come forth with deep regrets for what you did, and ask forgiveness from the suffering people in Israel.”
