Lackey (1-0) made his Cardinals debut after being traded to St. Louis from Boston at the trade deadline.

The Brewers jumped out to a quick lead on an Aramis Ramirez single in the first inning before Mark Reynolds launched a solo home run in the top of the second. Lackey would settle down and enter into a pitchers duel with Matt Garza. Milwaukee’s starter cruised through his first six innings before tweaking his left oblique and exiting the game for a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

Garza’s bullpen let him down in the bottom of the seventh when Matt Holliday homered off Zach Duke to start the rally. AJ Pierzynski later singled home a run to tie the game at 2-2 ahead of an Oscar Taveras double that plated Jhonny Peralta for the go-ahead run.

Trever Rosenthal closed the door for St. Louis for his Major League-leading 34th save. Jeremy Jeffress (0-1) took the loss for Milwaukee.
