Both women stressed the importance of education for girls and women, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Sixty million girls today not in school, 30 million of those in sub-Saharan Africa. I want our young people across the globe to be talking about how do we fix that,” Obama said.

The two also touched on the need to teach boys to not discriminate.

“We do need to make sure worldwide, that all humans are valued. That women and men are valued, that girls and boys are valued,” Bush said.

Bush’s speech with the current first lady was followed by her husband, George W. Bush, announcing an expansion of his institute’s Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon initiative for cervical and breast cancer screenings in Africa.
