(POCATELLO, ID) – A federal program is putting affordable military-surplus material into the hands of local law enforcement agencies.

Officials say area police departments can receive bullet-proof vests, clothing, weapons, and ammunition, often for free through the U.S. Department of Defense.

Pocatello Police received more than a dozen rifles through the program in recent years, and other departments have received helmets and armored personnel carriers.

Agencies nationwide have benefited from $5.1 billion in excess military equipment since 1997.
