Over 1,700 Killed and 1,900 Injured by Acts of Terrorism and Violence in Iraq in July

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(BAGHDAD, Iraq) — The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq released its casualty figures for the month of July on Friday, reporting at least 1,737 Iraqis killed and 1,978 injured in acts of terrorism and violence.
The figures do not take into account casualties in the western province of Anbar. Still, more than 1,100 civilians are believed to have been killed in July and over 1,500 more injured. Nickolay Mladenov, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Iraq, said that he is “concerned about the rising number of casualties in Iraq, particularly amount the civilian population.”
“Children and women are most vulnerable,” Mladenov said, “All sides should ensure that civilians are protected and that international humanitarian law is respected.”
Baghdad was the most impacted region with 415 civilians killed and 620 more injured.
“Despite the continuing fighting, politicians have shown that they can work together in choosing the new President and the new Speaker of the Council of Representatives,” Mladenov noted. “It is time that they move forward on the creation of a new government that can address the root causes of violence in Iraq and ensure equitable development for all communities.”
