There’s no word yet on which character they’ll focus on, but the target date is supposedly sometime in 2017.

Insiders say it’s part of a larger plan to revamp Sony’s Spider-Man Universe that includes the studio’s recent move of pushing the next installment of its Spider-Man franchise out of 2016 and into 2018.

If a female fronted superhero movie does happen, it will be the first one with a leading lady since Marvel’s Elektra in 2005. X-Men, Avengers, even Guardians of the Galaxy all feature female superheroes, but they’re always part of a group mostly dominated by guys.

It should be noted that while all those characters started in the pages of Marvel Comics, for now the rights to make movies centering on the web-slinger and his rogues gallery sit with Sony; X-Men with 20th Century Fox, which produced the aforementioned Daredevil dud spin-off Elektra.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige tells ABC News Radio that a female-fronted superhero movie is definitely coming soon.

Feige explains, “The answer is yes, the question is when. And that’s what we discuss now internally, trying to figure out, because right now we’re only doing two movies a year, and we’ve got a number of them in the pipeline already, when and how do we do that in the best way.”

Guardians, and The Avengers — and movies featuring the individual Avengers — are the property of Disney-owned Marvel Studios.
