Stocks Kick Off Week with Gains
Published at(NEW YORK) — Wall Street started the week with gains, as all three major market indices rose Monday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 76 points, finishing at 16569.28; the Nasdaq Composite was up 31 at 4383.89; and the S&P ended the day at 1938.98, up 14 points.
Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway reported a second quarter profit of $6.4 billion, while investors received another boost from a bailout package announced by Portuguese officials for struggling financial institution Banco Espirito Santo.
General Motors received a subpoena from the Justice Department calling for documents related to subprime auto loans, the company says. The feds are said to be considering a civil lawsuit linked to the loans generally made to borrowers with questionable credit histories.
