According to a statement released by the company, Supervalu experienced a “criminal intrusion” into the part of its computer network that deals with processing of credit and debit card transactions. The intrusion may have impacted both the company’s retail stores and its standalone liquor stores.

Supervalu says that the hackers may have obtained access to account numbers, expiration dates, other numerical information and/or the cardholder’s name from cards used in transactions between June 22, 2014 and July 17, 2014. The company says that its warning to customers includes those who shopped at stores under the Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Shop ‘n Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy banners.

Supervalu says that once it recognized the intrusion, the company took immediate steps to secure its network. It has also opened an ongoing investigation, supported by third-party experts, into the scope of the incident.

President and CEO of Supervalu, Sam Duncan assured shoppers that “the safety of our customers’ personal information is a top priority for us.”
