In the clip, Hanks reads several scenes with actress Robin Wright, who plays Jenny, Gump’s elusive love interest in the movie.

It’s possible the video isn’t a true audition since Hanks was already a big star at that point and probably didn’t have to go through the standard audition process. It does, however, offer an interesting look at the evolution of his Oscar-winning performance.

Noticeably missing from those early reads is Gump’s Southern accent.

The video also includes auditions from the actors playing young Forrest and young Jenny, as well as Haley Joel Osment, who played Forrest’s son in the film.
