Tony Stewart Will Not Race at Michigan This Weekend
Published at(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) — Tony Stewart has decided not to race this Sunday in the Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway. It will be the second consecutive Cup event he will sit out since his involvement in a fatal accident in a sprint car race in New York that took the life of Kevin Ward, Jr.
Stewart’s NASCAR team, Stewart-Haas Racing, announced Thursday that Jeff Burton will drive the No. 14 car in Stewart’s place at Michigan. It also stated, “Stewart’s plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined.”
Stewart struck and killed Ward Jr. during a sprint car race in Canandaigua, New York, last Saturday night. He missed the Cup event at Watkins Glen the next day.
A funeral for Ward Jr. was held Thursday in Turin, New York.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
