United Launch Alliance Sends Seventh GPS Satellite into Space

Photo by Bill Ingalls/NASA via Getty Images(CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.) — United Launch Alliance successfully launched its second rocket this week on Saturday morning, carrying the seventh GPS-enabled satellite for the U.S. Air Force.
The newest satellite will join the previous six next-generation GPS satellites in a “timing and navigation system utilizing 24 satellites in six different planes.” According to ULA, the satellites are approximately 11,000 miles above the surface of the Earth.
The next ULA launch is scheduled for Aug. 13 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
Saturday’s successful launch represented the second launch in four days by the partnered efforts of Lockheed Martin and The Boeing Company, and the third time this year that they’ve held two successful launches in one week.
