However, there is at least one place where female venture capitalists seem to be doing quite a bit better in raising money than men, and that’s on crowdfunding site Kickstarter.

Researchers Jason Greenberg and Ethan Mollick from NYU and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively, made that finding after examining 1,250 proposed projects from 2010 to 2012.

In each case, the Kickstarter goal was at least $5,000, as Greenberg and Mollick focused on five categories: gaming, technology, film, fashion and children’s book publishing. They were chosen because of an equal distribution of male and female founders and backers.

After reviewing the successes of the Kickstarter campaigns, Greenberg and Mollick discovered that women were 13 percent more likely to make their goals.

Interestingly, while there are far more male founders of tech projects on Kickstarter, women held a 65-percent to 30-percent advantage in reaching their fundraising goals in this area.

Mollick explains that it might have to do with women disproportionately supporting other women in a field that has always been dominated by men.
