CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – Gov. Matt Mead says he expects to be ready to brief state lawmakers early next year about the best deal Wyoming could get to expand Medicaid coverage to low-income people.

Mead says he and state Health Department Director Tom Forslund met recently with federal officials to discuss the possibility of Wyoming agreeing to Medicaid expansion. Mead says he wants to present information on the federal government’s best offer to the Wyoming Legislature when it meets again early next year.

The Legislature repeatedly has rejected some $50 million in federal funds to extend Medicaid to about 17,600 adults but lawmakers directed Mead to explore a possible deal. Mead has said he doesn’t trust federal promises to continue funding.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Pete Gosar has criticized Mead for not expanding the program.
