Ghani defeated his rival Abdullah Abdullah in a run-off election in July, but Abdullah refuted the outcome of the election and demanded an audit. The audit, which has been overseen by U.S. and foreign observers, appears likely to show that Ghani did indeed win the election.

On Monday, Abdullah said that he would not accept the results of the audit and did not decisively say he would support the unity government that Ghani and the U.S. have hoped to form.

On Wednesday, Ghani said that the electoral audit has been up to international standards and that he will wait until the Afghan Election Commission announces the results before claiming the presidency. Ghani also urged Abdullah to come back to form a national unity government in the interest of the country.
