Although earning a college degree has proven that it can enhance a person’s salary over a lifetime of work, University of Missouri economist Rajeev Darolia says that attending a for-profit college might not be the answer.

Darolia and his team sent out more than 8,900 fictitious resumes to employers listing educational experience that included for-profit college, community college or no college at all.

The results astounded the UM researchers. Apparently, employers gave equal attention to “applicants” with either for-profit or community college experience. Furthermore, there also seemed to be little difference in responses to “applicants” who claimed not to have gone to college.

Naturally, it’s up to the individual where they’ll continue their education. However, what Darolia and his team are saying is that there are better alternatives than for-profit colleges.
