“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Hits Blu-Ray and DVD Tuesday

Buena Vista(NEW YORK) — Captain America: The Winter Soldier, one of the biggest hits and best reviewed movies of the year, is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray Tuesday.

The film from Marvel Productions — which like ABC News, is owned by Disney — earned nearly $715 million worldwide, and has spawned a third installment, due in theaters May 6, 2016.

The movie shows Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America coming to grips with the modern world, and coming to find the agency S.H.I.E.L.D. for which he works isn’t what he once thought. Along with his Avengers pals — Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury — as well as series newcomer Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Cap uncovers a deadly conspiracy within the agency and faces off with The Winter Soldier, a legendary assassin who was once like a brother to the spangly hero.

Robert Redford also stars as Alexander Pearce, the head of the spy agency, as does Revenge’s Emily VanCamp, who plays the mysterious Agent 13.

The Blu-Ray features a gag reel, a collection of deleted scenes, commentary from directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and making-of featurettes, including an in-depth look at what went into the movie’s brutal hand-to-hand fight scenes.

On that topic, Sebastian Stan, who appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger, and played The Winter Soldier in the sequel, told ABC News Radio, “It’s just about three months of repetitive, just basically practice…It’s like sitting at the piano and like pressing the right keys…Everything is…meticulously choreographed. It’s like a dance…It’s not like you have a lot of room to sort of improvise, because…yes, you want make it believable, but it’s gotta be safe.” Still, he laughed, accidents did happen. “You can’t not get hit at some point.”

The movie’s directors stressed realistic action over computer generated effects wherever possible, and it paid off for the audience — and made it easy for the actors to get into character, Stan says — particularly in a freeway shootout scene that was filmed in Cleveland. “You walk on set and there’s cars with bullet holes in them, and fires…and extras running every which way. And so as an actor that’s a gold mine to play off of.”
