With the win, the Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak to ranked opponents. It was their first victory over a ranked team since 2009 when they beat then-No. 18 Houston.

East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden was arguably the player of the game as he completed 23 out of 47 passes for 427 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

Carden’s 427 passing yards were the third-most ever allowed by Virginia Tech in a single game.

The biggest play of the game happened with just 16 seconds left in the contest when Carden ran in the game-winning touchdown on the one-yard line to seal with win.

East Carolina wide receiver also had a big game. He finished the day with six catches for 224 yards. Oddly enough, he didn’t catch a touchdown pass in the game.
