GETTY 22614 Golf? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1411935425225James_Thomas_Photo/Thinkstock(GLENEAGLES, Scotland) — Europe continued its dominance as it won a third consecutive Ryder Cup behind the charge of Rory McIlroy and rookie Jamie Donaldson on Sunday.

McIlroy started the round strong with a score of six under par on the first six holes.

Donaldson sealed the day with a powerful drive on the 15th hole that placed the ball within two feet of the cup.

The Europeans finshed the Ryder cup with a final score of 16 1/2 to 11 1/2 over the Americans.

The event was not without controversy for the Americans as Phil Mickelson rode the bench for the final two days of the event and was quick to criticize captain Tom Watson.

“We had a great formula in ’08, and I don’t know why we strayed from it,” Mickelson said. “What Zinger did was really a good format. Maybe we should relive that.”

The Europeans can celebrate with the Ryder cup for another two years until the rivalry renews at Hazeltine outside Minneapolis.
