The 6-foot-1, 200 pound senior quarterback accounted for at least three touchdowns for the third-straight game, and scored on a 15-yard dash at the end of the second quarter to erase the Fighting Irish’s first deficit of the season, and give them the lead heading into halftime.

“He just understands the game,” Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said of Golson. “The game is slower for him than it was when he was here in his first year. The game has slowed down. He sees the field better. He can see it better. He’s not there yet. We missed some things tonight that would have changed the complexion of the game.”

Notre Dame (3-0) would outscore Purdue (1-2) 13-0 in the second half, giving the Irish its seventh-straight victory over the Boilermakers.

The two teams, which have played each other every year since 1946, will now take a five year break before resuming their rivalry in 2020.

The Fighting Irish have won their first three games of the season for the second time in three years — they last did that in 1987 when they did it in four-straight seasons.
