Home Depot Confirms Data Breach
Published at | Updated at(ATLANTA) — Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retailer, confirmed Monday that hackers penetrated its payment systems.
Home Depot said its payment data systems were breached in April but the cyber-attack was only discovered this month.
The retailer said it is still trying to determine the scope, scale and impact of the breach, but at this point there is no evidence that debit card PIN numbers were stolen. However, anyone who shopped at Home Depot and paid with plastic in the last five months may have had their information compromised.
In a statement, the company apologized for any frustration and anxiety, and asked customers for patience.
“We owe it to our customers to alert them that we now have enough evidence to confirm that a breach has indeed occurred,” said Home Depot CEO Frank Blake. “It’s important to emphasize that no customers will be responsible for fraudulent charges to their accounts.”
Home Depot said it is offering free credit monitoring and identity protection services to any customer who used a payment card at one of its stores. More information: https://homedepot.allclearid.com/
