Messier/NHLI via Getty Images(RALEIGH, N.C.) — The regular season hasn’t even begun and the Carolina Hurricanes are already dealing with a devastating injury to one of their best players as center Jordan Staal will miss the next three to four months with a broken bone in his right leg.

Staal suffered the injury Tuesday in the team’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres.

“I’m concerned for sure. He’s a big piece of what we’re going to do moving forward,” Hurricanes’ head coach Bill Peters said before learning of the severity of the injury.

Staal is a two-player, who is entering his third season in Carolina. Last season, he played in all 82 games, and hasn’t missed a regular season game since  joining the team. He scored 15 goals and totaled 40 points, while finishing fifth among Hurricanes last season.

Staal’s brother Eric is also a member of the Hurricanes, and he’s also working his way back from an injury. He is expected to play in the team’s preseason game on Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues.
