BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Idaho’s typically active wildfire season is closing with a slow fizzle after short bursts of rain and cooler temperatures dampened the state’s tinderbox of fuel.

Fire officials say this year’s season consumed nearly 271 square miles in Idaho, which is the lowest since 2009. States along the West Coast became the center of attention for this season.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management fire mitigation expert Jennifer Myslivy says fewer fires meant there were more resources available to suppress the flames faster.

She adds that Idaho firefighters didn’t have to compete to obtain air tankers and helicopters that provide large drops of water or fire retardant.
