“Mr. DiCaprio is a credible voice in the environmental movement, and has a considerable platform to amplify its message,” Ban said. “I am pleased he has chosen to add his voice to U.N. efforts to raise awareness of the urgency and benefits of acting now to combat climate change.”

DiCaprio is invited to a U.N. climate summit to be held on Sept. 23.

The Great Gatsby star founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, and has used the organization to build relationships with environmental leaders and experts.

DiCaprio is now one of 12 U.N. Messengers of Peace who, along with one Goodwill Ambassador, advocate on behalf of the U.N. on “priority issues.” Messengers of Peace, the U.N. says, are, “individuals who possess widely recognized talents in the fields of art, film, literature, music and sports, helping to raise worldwide awareness of the [U.N.]’s ideals and activities.”
