ABC 91714 NeilPatrickHarris? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1410984480576ABC/Lou Rocco(NEW YORK) — Neil Patrick Harris stopped by ABC’s The View Wednesday and revealed all the details of his Italian wedding to David Burtka, which took place earlier in the month.

“We’ve been together over 10 years and I think when our kids got to the age they were having reasonable conversations, when they are asking lots of why questions, to have a clear-cut explanation of who their daddy is, I think is great,” Harris said of why he tied the knot. “He’s my husband and it was easier than partner or boyfriend or something like that.”

The former How I Met Your Mother star said only about 45 people were at the wedding and “I just wanted to be able to say nice things about David, to David, in front of the people that matter the most to us. It was less about a proclamation and more of a declaration.”

Harris, 41, and Burtka have been together since 2004 and their twins via a surrogate — Gideon Scott, a boy, and Harper Grace, a girl — were born in 2010. The wedding was at a rented castle, where they also had Elton John perform.

“It was so crazy, because when you watch other people say their vows and get all chocked up, you say ‘Come on! Pull it together man,'” Harris added. “Then when you are standing there and it’s you and you have this piece of paper in your hand and it’s shaking … you can’t help but just get super-duper chocked up.”

Harris also explained how his daughter was the flower girl and his son was supposed to be the ring bearer, but he decided he wanted to be “the orange boy” and hand out oranges to the guests.

“We said, ‘What is an orange boy?’ and he explained this whole thing where he comes down with a basket of oranges,” Harris said. “Then, we were trying to find a plan like we’ll tie the rings to an orange.”

While Harris was originally worried about his son doing the “orange thing,” he quickly learned during the wedding, it was his daughter, Harper, who caused a bit of a fuss when the wedding was about to begin and she was to throw the flowers.

After the wedding director said it was time for Harper to go, Harris said, “She doesn’t go, she won’t go. She panics and she’s refusing to go and she’s clinging to legs and she’s starting to cry and we’re all stressed like, ‘You have to go now, we’ve timed this to the sunset.'”

“I say, ‘David, let’s just pick her up and we’ll all go together.’ Then David says, ‘Well, if Gideon goes first, then will you go?’ Gideon goes, ‘OK’ and he picked up his little orange basket and by himself, he walked confidently all the way down 20 steps, got halfway and just stopped!’ And we’re behind, ‘You can do it buddy, you got this!’ And he just took a breath and he walked all the way down,” he said.

Harris said Gideon ended up handing out the oranges and it was “very special.”
