Martin has helped lead the Pirates to become one of the top teams in the National League again this season. The  team will most likely make the playoffs.

In line for a big pay day, Pirates’ general manager Neil Huntington knows the risk and reward involved with negotiations.

“We are going to try to do everything we can to keep Russ. We’d love nothing more than to have (Martin) in a Pirates uniform,” Huntington told the Pittsburgh Tribune. “(Martin) is a unique circumstance where we got beat up for signing him and if he does (leave), we are going to get highly criticized.”

Now 31 years old and in his ninth season in Major League Baseball, Martin is hitting .297 with 11 home runs, 67 RBIs, and a .409 OBP. It is the first time he’s hit over .250 in a season since back in 2008 when he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
