Twitter Testing ‘Buy’ Button Within Tweets
Published at | Updated at(NEW YORK) — On Monday, Twitter began testing on a new functionality for the social media site that would allow users to make purchases directly from their newsfeed.
According to a post to the company’s blog, “a small percentage of U.S. users” will begin seeing tweets from business partners featuring a “buy” button. Among the test partners are companies including The Home Depot, organizations including Global Citizen, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and musical acts including Paramore, Pharrell, Brad Paisley, and Demi Lovato, among others.
Twitter says that a user who clicks the “buy” button within a tweet will be given additional product details, and then will be prompted to enter shipping and payment information. From there, the pertinent information is sent to the merchant, and the product is soon sent on its way.
Twitter noted that all shipping and payment information is encrypted and safely stored, but can be removed at any time, in an attempt to reassure consumers following a year of data breaches at numerous retailers.
