Unclear if Monarch building can be saved
Published at | Updated atPOCATELLO, Idaho (AP) – A fire official in eastern Idaho says it’s too soon to know if a 105-year-old building on the National Register of Historic Places can be restored following a fire.
Pocatello Fire Chief David Gates tells the Idaho State Journal in a story on Tuesday that a structural engineer will have to determine if the three-story building made of red brick can be restored.
A fire on Friday severely damaged the Monarch Building in Old Town Pocatello.
The building opened as a hotel in 1909 and most recently was being used as an apartment building with some shops.
No one was injured in the fire and damage estimates haven’t been provided.
Gates says it’s not clear what caused the fire but it appears to have started below the second floor.
