The Buckeyes (6-1) held a 17-0 lead at halftime, thanks to a running score from Ezekiel Elliott and a touchdown pass from J.T. Barrett to Jeff Heuerman. However, the offensive production stalled in the second half. Penn State (4-3) began their rally on the defensive end when Anthony Zettel picked off a pass from Barrett and ran it back 40 yards for the score.

The Nittany Lions inched closer in the fourth quarter when quarterback Christian Hackenberg hit Saeed Blacknall for a 24-yard pass, making it a 17-14 game. Sam Ficken then tied the game with a field goal late, leaving just nine seconds on the clock. Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime, sending the game to another extra frame.

In the second overtime, Barrett scampered into the end zone from four-yards out to put Ohio State ahead 31-24. Penn State had a chance to tie the game, but Joey Bosa sacked Hackenberg on fourth-and-5 to seal the victory.
