Making matters worse, BYU quarterback Taysom Hill suffered a broken leg in the first half, effectively ending his season.

“It was really difficult to watch Taysom go down,” said BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall. “Our execution will now have to be better from top to bottom because of Taysom’s ability to create. There just isn’t another Taysom Hill out there anywhere.”

Hill, who had started to garner Heisman finalist talk, was injured as he scrambled to his right before being tackled by the Aggies Brian Suite. The junior quarterback landed awkwardly on his leg and had to be carted off the field.

That injury merely started the downfall for the Cougars (4-1) who trailed 21-14 at the time of his departure. Utah State (3-2) added another touchdown before halftime and never looked back.

Backup quarterback Christian Stewart threw three interceptions in the second half as BYU was only able to convert a pair of field goals the rest of the way. Any hopes of a comeback were officially put on ice when Nick Vigil scored from one yard out to make it 35-17 late in the third.

The Aggies racked up 457 total yards of offense in the upset, including 321 passing yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Darell Garretson.
