(24) LSU Knocks Off (3) Ole Miss

Chris Graythen/Getty Images(BATON ROUGE, La.) — Louisiana State (LSU) trailed 7-3 in the fourth quarter of a home game against third-ranked Ole Miss on Saturday. A late scoring drive and a defensive stand helped the 24th-rated Tigers pull out a 10-7 win at Tiger Stadium.

In a low-scoring affair, the Ole Miss Rebels (7-1) took the early lead when Bo Wallace found Cody Core for a 15-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter. The nation’s top offense was heavily slowed by LSU (7-2), unable to score for the remainder of the game. However, the Tigers offense could only muster a field goal in the first half.

The tide turned in the fourth quarter as LSU put together a 95-yard drive, spanning six minutes, that ended with the go-ahead touchdown. Quarterback Anthony Jennings, who threw two interceptions in the win, found Logan Stokes from three yards out to put the Tigers ahead 10-7 with five minutes to play.

Ole Miss had a chance to avoid the upset, driving to the LSU 25-yard line with less than 10 seconds remaining. Gary Wunderlich was sent out to attempt a game-tying 42-yard field goal, but a delay of game penalty pushed the Rebels back an extra five yards. Head coach Hugh Freeze opted to go for it, with no timeouts, and Wallace had his pass intercepted at the goal line by Ronald Martin.

For head coach Les Miles, it was a very emotional win as it came less than 24 hours after his mother, Martha, passed away.

“After the game I can’t tell you the number of young men that threw their arms around me and told me, ‘Love you coach’,” said Miles, who received the game ball following the win. “It is as touching as anything I have had happen.”

The victory also added to Miles’ legacy of come-from-behind wins. Since 2005 LSU is 24-23 when trailing in the fourth quarter, an FBS record.
