DECLO, Idaho (AP) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho has filed a lawsuit against a south-central Idaho school district accusing it of sexually and religiously discriminating against a student.

The Times-News reports that Declo High School and Cassia County School District denied senior Sierra Norman the opportunity to run for student body president last spring.

School officials argue Norman took too many online dual-credit classes to qualify as a full-time student.

The ACLU says records show she is a full-time student and the school district receives state funding based on her status.

The organization is requesting an independent investigation, a written apology, a policy revision and training on fair treatment for school officials.

School district spokeswoman Debbie Critchfield says officials are looking over the lawsuit and will respond in 10 days.
