Airline Cabin Cleaners Strike over Ebola Exposure Fears

Spencer Platt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Hundreds of airline cabin cleaners have walked off the job, striking over health and safety issues that include fears over possible exposure to Ebola.
The strike involves Air Serv cabin cleaners in Terminal D at New York’s LaGuardia airport, a contractor that serves Delta, as well as supporting workers from LaGuardia and JFK International airports.
Striking workers carried signs and chanted during Thursday’s rally, protesting against conditions that often find them encountering hypodermic needles, vomit and blood.
The strike comes as additional screening is scheduled to begin at JFK and four other main U.S. airports, a means of trying to catch any travelers from Ebola-ravaged countries who may be carrying the disease.
The ebola virus has killed more than 3,000 people in West Africa and the death toll is still rising. On Wednesday, Thomas Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the U.S., died from the disease.
