If Barea and the Timberwolves reach a buyout, it will enable him to become a free agent by early next week.

ESPN reports that Barea will be waived prior to Monday’s 5 p.m. deadline for teams to cut rosters down to 15 players.

Since signing with the Timberwolves prior to the 2011-2012 season, the 30-year-old Barea has been a solid guard off the bench for the team. Last season, he averaged 8.4 points while playing 18.6 minutes per game.

If or when he hits the market, Barea is expected to sign with his former team, the Dallas Mavericks. Barea played his first five NBA seasons with the Mavericks and helped them win a championship during the 2010-2011 season.

Barea is expected to clear waivers as his salary-cap number for the coming season is $4.5 million.
