The vehicles, which were sold to police departments as patrol cars, come equipped with a transmission selector lever that contains two pins.

“If the pins get displaced,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains on its website, “the driver may be able to shift the vehicle from ‘Park’ without depressing the brake pedal or remove the ignition key without the transmission being in ‘Park.'”

If either scenario were to happen, the vehicle could start moving, increasing the risk of a crash.

So far, GM says it is aware of one crash but no injuries or deaths.

A service kit is being shipped to dealers and will be available to affected owners free of charge.
