Gov. Rick Perry Tours Texas Lab Where Efforts Are Underway to Combat Ebola, Infectious Diseases
Published at(GALVESTON, Texas) — Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, toured the Galveston National Laboratory at the University of Texas Medical Branch on Tuesday, getting a glimpse at the work the lab is doing to understand, respond to and counter pandemic disease, such as Ebola.
“Texas is fortunate to have dedicated and talented researchers such as those here in Galveston,” Perry said after the tour. “Cutting-edge facilities like this are where theory becomes reality, where therapies are tested and where vaccines are found.”
Perry’s tour comes as Thomas Eric Duncan, the Ebola patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, the first person diagnosed with Ebola within the United States, began receiving an experimental drug. Duncan is receiving brincidofovir, a drug produced by North Carolina company Chimerix, and remains in critical condition.
