BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Same-sex couples in Idaho were issued marriage licenses Wednesday morning at courthouses across the state after months of on-again, off-again messages from the courts.

It is the latest state to begin recognizing gay marriage in the wake of a series of court rulings nationwide.

Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter said Tuesday in a statement that the state had done all it could for now to prevent gay marriages from being legally recognized. The same day, state Attorney General Lawrence Wasden also dropped his legal opposition to allowing the marriages to begin this week.

In the past week, some Idaho couples have made multiple journeys to get marriage licenses only to find last-minute court decisions blocked the way.
