Milan Lucic Apologizes for Obscene Gesture

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(BOSTON, MA) — Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic lost his cool Thursday in a matchup with the Montreal Canadiens and made an obscene gesture towards the fans.

Friday, the NHL fined him $5,000 and today he apologized to Bruins, Canadiens and hockey fans for his actions.

“Obviously, I’m not proud of what I did there,” Lucic said. “… I know (Canadiens fans) can get under your skin sometimes, but they are great fans. I apologize for my actions. I regret what I did.”

All game, Canadiens players were getting under the skin of Lucic and he became visibly frustrated.  At 18:40 in the third period, Lucic recieved a two-minute boarding penalty when he hit Canadiens’ Alexei Emelin.

As he entered the box, the fans continued to heckle Lucic. In response he he made a gesture with his right hand and mocked raising the Stanley Cup.

Lucic was then ejected from the game after Montreal scored on the ensuing power-play for mouthing off to an official.

After the apology, Bruins Head Coach Claude Julien came to the defense Lucic.

“Everybody that knows Milan knows that he’s a really good person,” Julien said. “His teammates, coaching staff or any people he’s come into contact with knows that he’s a great person off the ice. I think his emotions sometimes on the ice have gotten the better of him and, to his defense, I think that penalty was probably a real tough call that maybe we don’t really agree on.”
