The whale washed ashore Thursday morning at Smith Point County Park in Shirley. It is about 58-feet long and is said to be a male finback whale, according to WABC-TV in New York City.

The animal had been dead for some time, the station reported. A cause of death has not yet been determined and officials are working with the foundation to quickly remove the body.

Neither the Riverhead Foundation nor Suffolk County park officials immediately responded to ABC News’ requests for comment.
