Labonte has zoomed around the track for 26 full seasons at the NASCAR level and run on a partial schedule for the better part of the last decade.

Talledega will be the 890th career start for the driver who will turn 58 next month.

”You know, it’s only about the third time I’ve said this is going to be my last race,” Labonte said Saturday. ”But this is really going to be the last one. It’s been fun.”

Labonte won his two titles more than a decade apart. In 1984, he won his first title holding off Harry Gant and Bill Elliot. He won again in 1996 with two race wins, while outdriving Jeff Gordon and Dale Jarret for the Cup Championship.

He was also nominated for the NASCAR Hall-of-Fame class of 2015, but was not chosen as a member.
