Past participation in sports also seems to have been a boon for businesswomen in positions of authority, judging by the results of a survey conducted by EY Women Athletes Business Network and espnW.

In the wide-ranging global survey of 400 female executives, about a fifth of whom are from the U.S., an astounding 94 percent had played at least one sport during their lives, with 52 percent involved in athletics on the collegiate level.

Meanwhile, six in ten say that their experience in sports was a key component to their success in the business world, while three-quarters believe athletic involvement can hasten leadership and career potential.

One other important finding: a female executive with a background in sports is more apt to hire women who also played on the field of competition.
