The members of the House of Commons voted 274-12 in favor of recognizing “the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel,” according to the legislature’s Twitter feed.

Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Margot Wallstrom also said on Monday that her country’s government would recognize the Palestinian state, in the hopes of “making the parties to the conflict less unequal.” Sweden will also provide approximately $10 million in contributions to Gaza for “humanitarian and development support,” on top of the annual financial support of about $100 million.

Wallstrom did say that the Palestinian Unity Government must continue to reform, fight corruption and increase the political influence and economic participation of women — responsibilities that come with the international recognition.
