Vatican Document Shows Shift in Tone Towards Gays
Published at(ROME) — A new Vatican document reveals a significant shift in tone towards LGBT people, saying gay Catholics had “gifts” to offer the church.
The document on gay Catholics was released Monday after the first week of a two-week-long Vatican synod on the family with more than 200 church leaders.
In it, leaders wrote the Catholic Church should attempt to find “a fraternal space” for homosexuals while at the same time sticking to its doctrine on family and marriage.
The Catholic Church has long condemned homosexual acts and has opposed gay marriage, but in this synod, leaders suggested for the first time that the Church should stop using such language as “intrinsically disordered.” That’s how former Pope Benedict described LGBT people.
The document serves as a guideline for the last week of closed-door discussion on the family and poses questions for Catholics to mull over before the final round of talks on the family in a year.
